The Mother Daughter Book Club Sr. has finally had it’s first meeting. I was filled with anticipation and had a hard time waiting for it. I really enjoyed myself and am excited about getting to know the girls and their moms who were able to attend.
Three mother daughter pairs (counting me and a daughter I borrowed from a coworker) were able to make it to the meeting. Karissa and Lauryn brought their moms and Sophie was there with me. As they came in I gave them a list of twenty books and they had to try to see if they knew the authors. Some of the books were Ivy and Bean, Harry Potter and The Secret Garden.
Because we’re a new group and didn’t know each other well, I thought it would be fun if we played a game called Two Truths And A Lie. You have to say two true things about you and one lie. Then everyone else guesses which one is the lie. It’s a fun way to get to know each other. I learned something about each of the girls there. Sophie likes horseback riding, Karissa enjoys helping others and although Lauryn is good at detecting a lie, she’s not very good a lying herself.
By the time the game was over, we were feeling pretty comfortable with each other. We had a great discussion about our favorite books. Sophie’s favorite right now is a series called. Septimus Heap. She’s on the fourth one already. Lauryn loves Artemis Fowl. She loves the fairy language you can decode and hopes there will be an eighth book. (Good news. I just looked it up and book 8 will be out in the summer of 2012.)
Karissa and her mom had to leave so we cut the discussion short to decide what book to read for the next meeting. Our two choices were 11 Birthdays by: Wendy Mass and Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls Book 2: The New Girl by Meg Cabot.
11 Birthdays is about a girl named Amanda who always celebrates her birthday with her best friend Leo, who shares her birthday. Except this year. They had a huge fight on their last party and haven’t spoken since. All Amanda wants to do is get through the day, but when she wakes up the next day, it’s her birthday again!
Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls Book 2: The New Girl takes place after Allie has moved to her new house. She’s nervous about being "The new girl," but makes some friends quickly. Things seem to be going well until Allie starts getting bullied by a girl in her new class. How will Allie handle it?
Both books are really good, but the vote was unanimous. Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls Book 2: The New Girl will be our first book.
I’m really looking forward to this club. The girls are wonderful and I enjoyed getting to know them and their moms.
The next meeting will be Friday, June 24, 2011 at 3:00 pm in Community Room A of the St. George Library. I hope to see you there!
